In the Latin Catholic tradition, doesn't believe that a spirit goes straight to heaven when a person dies. Instead it stays with the body in peace (like a hibernation), waiting for the return of Christ. When he does arrive we all climb out of our graves in what ever state we are in and start to celebrate the return. This is why we celebrate the dead on Dia de los Muertos, they are close to this happiness, lay out food for them while they wait, and laugh at the idea of death; because really its just another chapter in the book of life, and it's not the last one.
